SIX MONTHS' HACKING or, Six Years Hacking Six Months Aint No Sentence

SIX MONTHS' HACKING or, Six Years Hacking Six Months Aint No Sentence

John M. Bennett Hacks Jim Leftwich's Six Months Aint No Sentence 2011-2016 & Other Mysteries

These works, or “hacks”, were created through a process of immersion into the great protean poem/texts of "Six Months Aint No Sentence" by Jim Leftwich. Leftwich's texts served as a source of hidden or explicit content, structure, resonance or echoing of other texts by other people from my own experience, of words and phrases chosen as if from a randomly consulted dictionary, words which caught my attention and were reflective of my own themes and manias; all of which resulted in these new and quite different text/poems, which are also quite different from anything else I've written, because they are resonant of Leftwich's originals, often in ways that are not obvious. The result, for me, is a unique, complex, multi-voiced, and fascinatingly mysterious corpus of writing. - John M. Bennett

ANTAGONIST POEMS by Luc Fierens

Fierens has the rebellious and challenging look of a poet determined to upset the flattening of our imaginary. Its deeply desacralizing and incisive tone finds in the assault and violence of the advertising and journalistic language a privileged way to intervene critically about reality, giving expression to an alternative and dissident visuality. The focus of his work within the field of collage focuses on his poetic vision, a transgressive vision that is involved in a persistent game of contradictions to end up in a hybrid entity halfway between the plastic and the purely poetic: collage-poem.

The aesthetic option of Luc Fierens is nourished by the fragment, the deviation, and above all, a will of critical activation that is not very present in the field of collage.

- Silvio de Gracia

FIELD HOLLERS by Iván Argüelles & Solomon Rino

Collaborative Long Poem

The authors describe this long poem like this: “Field Hollers was born of insomnia, trading stanzas largely predawn, back and forth before light harrowed.” This sequence of stanzas consists of a sort of dialogue, a back-and-forth between 2 “twins” (ie, 2 voices, not 2 sets of twins) who constantly switch places, go into reverse, or speak as one voice, so much so that there is little distinction, really, between them. They become a single double voice, and talk on a metaphoric and metaphysical plane in language that is achingly beautiful and resonant. This is a unique and extraordinary work, and can be read, and reread, in one sitting, and again and again and again. - John M. Bennett

THE TOAST by Mark Young

POETRY

Maybe it’s because “A railroad line runs im-/mediately behind the/parietal lobe.” Or maybe it’s because “Phallic ritual is a/literary genre that blends/aspects of natural rubber/& cognitive therapy…” I don’t know, but Mark Young’s poetry opens out into a kind of Gesamtkunstwerk, a total art work, limning our present moment. His work is at once intellectually engaging and truly entertaining. No small feat. I’m a fan. — Tom Beckett

IS KNOT by John M. Bennett

IS KNOT is: Poems, many incorporating visual elements, in English or Spanish or both, interspersed with visual poems, Fluxus-like texts, hacks, and collaborations. Written in 2016, it is a tour de force of Bennett's unique poetics. "Your visuals are priceless, John ... I prefer them to so much experimental work, either in the realm of the so-called visual arts or "concrete poetry" (which they really ain't) … your so-called poetry which calls itself verse, but is the cryptically deranged response to "official literature", stands head and shoulders above … Superimpositions of the subconscious stripped of Freudian valor (values?) … And knockout minimalism!" - Iván Argüelles

On Bennett's OJIJETE:

OJIJETE can be “read” in a conventional sense and also experienced strictly on the visual level. Bennett uses fonts, typography, tropes from concrete poetry and a minimal use of visual images to create one of the more effective image-texts that I have ever seen. I see in OJIJETE Ezra Pound's Cantos using ideograms, the fluidity of Paterson by William Carlos Williams and, of course, Charles Olson's Maximus. John M. Bennett is one of the few visual poets today who has the knowledge and skills to use the lessons of literary Modernism (and errors) to create a 21st century vispo. OJIJETE is a shining example of his abilities.
